How do you create smart, safe and efficient transportation in ports and terminals?

ICT participates in EU FP7 project Cargo-ANTs

“Cargo handling by Automated Next generation Transportation Systems for ports and terminals”. The Cargo-ANTs project aims to create smart Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Automated Trucks (ATs) that can co-operate in shared workspaces for efficient and safe freight transportation in main ports and freight terminals. The AGVs and ATs shall operate autonomous solely on sensor and GPS data, while nowadays common transponder grids are used for AGV autonomous driving.

Project partners

The Business Unit Automotive & Mobility participates, together with VDL as subcontractor, in this European FP7 project together with TNO in the Netherlands (as project leader) and Volvo Trucks in Sweden, as well as two European universities, being Halmstad University in Sweden, and CSIC in Spain. ICT focus is on integration, verification and validation of the AGV, especially focussing on functional safety aspects. The Cargo-ANTs project has a lead-time of 3 years and enables ICT to participate in state-of-the-art development of autonomous driving together with TNO.


  • Increase performance and throughput of freight transportation in main ports and freight terminals and maintain a high level of safety.
  • Develop an automated shared work yard for smart AGVs and ATs.
  • Develop and demonstrate a robust grid-independent positioning system and an environmental perception system that oversees safety of operations.
  • Develop and demonstrate planning, decision, control and safety strategies for Automated Next generation Transportation systems (ANTs), i.e. smart AGVs and ATs.

Research questions

  • Which combination of positioning techniques and sensors allow for reliable and accurate positioning for the proposed applications?
  • How can reliable environmental perception be achieved, in particular moving and stationary object detection, drivable path detection, docking point detection, absolute and relative object positioning?
  • How to set up and integrate a vehicle control system, including high-level site planning, path planning, interaction planning, and feedback control?
  • How can functional safety of automated vehicles be achieved?

Functional Safety implementation

The Business Unit Automotive & Mobility has built up domain knowledge on functional safety implementations and standards like ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 over a period of more than 15 years working for leading companies in this industry. Through in-house pre-developments and multiple customer projects with different requirements up to SIL3 and ASIL-D.

Chassis & Safety domain

Within the Chassis & Safety domain the Business Unit Automotive & Mobility provides system- and software engineering services for electronic systems with stringent reliability and robustness requirements that ensure stability, controllability and safety of the vehicle, evolving towards fully autonomous mobility, driving and safety.
